Counselling for Doctors and Healthcare Professionals
Working in healthcare can place unusual demands on a person's emotional and mental wellbeing.
Doctors and other healthcare professionals may spend their working lives caring for others while having little space to process their own stress, grief, difficult experiences or personal concerns.
At Reclaimind, Dr. Sudha Priyadarshiny offers confidential one-to-one psychological and therapeutic support for doctors and healthcare professionals. Her background in medicine (MBBS) and psychology, together with her training in expressive arts therapy, narrative approaches and somatic trauma therapy, gives her a particular interest in the emotional and personal challenges associated with working in healthcare.
Sessions are available online across India, with in-person sessions available in Bengaluru.
What brings healthcare professionals to counselling?
Doctors and healthcare professionals may seek support for many different reasons. Sometimes there is a specific problem that needs attention. At other times, a person may simply recognise that they have been struggling for longer than they would like.
Some concerns that may bring healthcare professionals to therapy include:
-
persistent work-related stress or emotional exhaustion
-
burnout and difficulty recovering after work
-
anxiety, overwhelm or difficulty switching off
-
distress following difficult clinical experiences
-
grief after the death of a patient
-
compassion fatigue and emotional depletion
-
perfectionism and fear of making mistakes
-
difficulties with professional identity or career decisions
-
changing specialties or leaving clinical practice
-
returning to work after a career break
-
balancing professional responsibilities with relationships and family life
-
difficulties setting boundaries at work
-
relationship or personal difficulties that are affecting work
-
experiences of loss, trauma or abuse
-
feeling disconnected from a profession that once felt meaningful
You do not need to wait until a problem has become a crisis before seeking support.
Why support from someone familiar with medicine can matter
Healthcare professionals do not always find it easy to seek psychological support. There can be concerns about confidentiality, professional identity, being judged by colleagues, or having to explain the realities of medical work to someone unfamiliar with the healthcare environment.
Dr. Sudha's background in medicine and psychology gives her an understanding of the professional context in which doctors work. Her interest in this population comes from her own education and experience in medicine, as well as her work in psychology and therapy.
Therapy remains a private space. You do not have to justify your feelings, minimise your difficulties or explain why something that happened at work affected you.

When additional mental-health care may be appropriate
Counselling and therapy are not a substitute for emergency mental-health care or specialist psychiatric care.
If an assessment indicates that you may benefit from psychiatric evaluation, clinical psychological assessment, addiction treatment or another specialist service, appropriate referral can be discussed.
If you are in immediate danger or are experiencing a mental-health emergency, please use an emergency service or crisis helpline rather than waiting for a therapy appointment.
